The Pantomime was formed to create a community enterprise linked to the "new" Community Centre. An advertisement was placed in the local paper for volunteers. The stage was made from potato boxes and pallets from a local farm. Paint, props, costumes and material were begged and borrowed, and "The Buckingham Community Pantomime" was underway. The community spirit has continued over the years and is as strong today as in 1984.
A production involves a cast
and crew of over 100 made up of a wide variety of people drawn from all parts of the town, ranging from raw beginners to budding stars on stage and a production crew of enthusiastic volunteers from all walks of life. Some have been involved since the very beginning but each year brings a crop of new faces eager to join the fun.
The Community Pantomime has become an essential highlight of the town's social calendar and the matinee performance always sells out in advance. Profits from each production are distributed to local projects: Buckingham Hospital, Project Street Life, Buckingham Scouts to name but a few but a few have all benefited from the Panto.
Other live theatre performances throughout the year in the Buckingham area are provided by The Old Gaolers. Details can be found at www.oldgaolers.org.uk
